one miraculous exception emerged in the early 21st Century: the country of Ecuador. Upon becoming the nation's president, celebrated economist Rafael Correa, began to implement a new form of government - one pragmatic and humanistic, that disposed of ineffectual, centuries-old political structures and replaced them with ecological and independent democracy, built on mass participation. For the first time in centuries, ordinary Ecuadorian citizens began to feel that their voices mattered and would be heard - which seemed revelatory to most indigenes. Suddenly, utopia became a reality.
