Synopsis
Bavarian-born Franz Osten directs this rural melodrama about the constant misfortunes of one pure-hearted bucolic lass. Durga (Devika Rani) is a barefoot innocent living with her ailling mother Heera. When she is unable to cough up the money for the medicine that would save her mom -- in spite of the help of a kindly village doctor named Jawahar (Rama Shukul) -- Durga faces one horrible stroke of bad luck after another. Her mother dies, she is accused of crime she did not commit, and she is ultimately left in utter penury. This film garnered much acclaim for lead actress Rani's performance.
