Eine Dakota mit US-Generälen, ihren Gattinnen und einem Mädchen an Bord startet von Wien in Richtung Pisa. Ein Sturm treibt die DC3 über die Schweizer Alpen ab. Wie durch ein Wunder umfliegt der Pilot orientierungslos die Bergspitzen bis die Maschine dann doch auf dem Gauligletscher abstürzt und die bisher spektakulärste Alpenrettung auslöst. Amerikanische Militärs invalideren Meinigen und versuchen mit Panzern den Gletscher zu erobern. Doch die Schweizer lassen sich durch die USA nicht beirren. Ein kleiner Bergtrupp steigt unter schwierigsten Bedingungen zur Unfallstelle. Zum ersten Mal landet auch ein Rettungsflugzeug auf Kufen auf dem ewigen Eis und die Schweiz wird von der Weltpresse gefeiert.
