Cora est une jeune fille idéaliste et passionnée d'hypnose. Elle découvre un jour que sa mère et son oncle Paul, le frère jumeau de son père, ont jadis entretenu une liaison. Elle comprend alors pourquoi les deux hommes sont brouillés. Apprenant que son oncle est rongé par la maladie et que sa mère lui rend visite en cachette, elle décide de renouer avec lui. Sensible à cette attention, Paul ne s'en laisse pas moins dépérir, avant de se suicider. Peu après, Cora assiste à un spectacle du grand Katz, «le roi de l'hypnose». Subjuguée par cet homme, elle s'arrange pour l'approcher. Elle devient son élève, son assistante, puis sa maîtresse.
