Do Dooni Chaar

Habib Faisal, perhaps better known for his screenplays (including that of Band Baaja Baaraat), made his directorial debut with this comedy-drama, a simple and realistic portrait of hard-pressed family life. The Duggals are a typical middle-class Delhi family with two children: college student Payal and Sandeep, who is still at school. The patriarch of the house, Santosh Duggal, is a maths teacher who can only afford to run a scooter, and shuttles between school and a coaching centre, where he gives tutorials in order to supplement his modest salary. Meanwhile, his wife concentrates on the day-to-day realities of looking after their cramped two-bed apartment, while the kids dream of buying an iPod and an LCD TV. Despite their limited resources, the Duggals get by with a fair degree of good humour. But then Santosh's sister, who lives in Meerut, invites them to a wedding; the catch being her insistence that the family come by car. And thus begins a series of mishaps, adventures and temptations that turns their life upside down and stretches their morality to the limit. Do Dooni Chaar (Two x Two = Four) marks the return to the screen of the real-life couple Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, who were such a popular romantic pairing during the 1970s.
