Na lučínský zámek se sjede místní honorace, aby se zúčastnila dražby hraběcího majetku, kterou organizuje notář dr. Jan Karas. Nejvíce zájmu vzbudí portrét sličné šlechtičny, ale protože se o něm říká, že je prokletý, nikdo si jej nekoupí. Na dobu, než se vrátí mladý hrabě a rozhodne o jeho osudu, má Karas obraz uložit u sebe doma. Uchvácen krásou portrétované dívky, tráví nyní před obrazem celé hodiny. Když však jednou plátno políbí, dívka na něm ožije a vystoupí z rámu. Překvapeného Karase šokuje přesnou staročeštinou a dožadováním se poměrů, které byly příznačné pro dobu před třemi sty lety. Dívka se představí jako komtesa Blanka z Blankenbergu a už se nehodlá do rámu vrátit. Karas se rozhodne vydávat ji za svou neteř a žárlí na její přibývající ctitele...
