Paris, 1939: In einem Untersuchungsgefängnis sitzen drei Männer in Abschiebehaft. Ein deutscher Seemann namens Lodeck, ein griechischer Koch und der polnisch-jüdische Metzger Grünstein. Mit der täglichen Brotration formen sich die Männer, die sich trotz aller Unterschiede einander annähern, Schachfiguren.
