Description Of A Memory

This film constitutes a follow-up to French Left Bank guru Chris Marker's 1960 opus Description of a Struggle. Whereas, in the original film, Marker traveled to Israel (then a country with a 15-year history) and speculated on its past, present and future, in this sequel Israeli-born director Dan Geva revisits Marker's images and reworks them in the style of an essay film. Throughout, Geva visually contrasts sociocultural elements from the original film with the same elements in 21st Century Israel, including the subjects of the original film (many of whom Geva tracks down and interviews, on-camera). More broadly, Geva uses screen time to demonstrate that the "future Israel" envisioned by Marker is indeed the country that had materialized by the early years of the 21st Century.
