Tommy, 22 Jahre alt, ist pleite und verschuldet, lebt immer noch bei seinen Eltern und hat ständig Streit mit seinem Vater. Der junge Mann will aus diesem Leben ausbrechen und glaubt, endlich die Möglichkeit dazu gefunden zu haben. Eine Stellenanzeige, die 400 Mark in der Woche verspricht, scheint wie auf ihn zugeschnitt en. Schnell macht er Bekanntschaft mit einer Drückerkolonne, die Kalle leitet. Doch Tommys Vorstellungen vom freien Leben werden alsbald im Keim erstickt: Er arbeitet mehr als 12 Stunden am Tag, geht von Haustür zu Haustür um Zeitschriftenabos zu verkaufen, lebt in einem verdreckten Mehrbettzimmer, erlebt psychische Gewalt.
