Dějiny motorismu v Čechách začínají, když Laurin s Klementem založili továrnu na výrobu motocyklet. Roku 1904 se konaly ve francouzském Dourdanu první motocyklové závody, kterých se zúčastnili i Češi. Seznámili a zamilovali se tu český mechanik František a Nanette, dcera francouzského mechanika Frontenaca. Český závodník Vondřich dojel pro poruchu druhý. V roce 1905 se konal závod znovu, Vondřich se pojistil zavazadlem náhradních dílů a vyhrál. Nanette s Františkem, kteří si celý rok psali, se znovu sešli. Po motorkách se začaly všude vyrábět automobily a v roce 1909 byl ve francouzském Gaillonu uspořádán jejich první závod. Vyhrál český závodník hrabě Kolovrat. Jeho mechanik František se v místním kostele oženil s milovanou Nanette.
