Synopsis
Raoul Walsh's Napoleonic naval adventure-romance, shot in England and France, stars Gregory Peck (in the role initially intended for Errol Flynn) and is based on three novels by CS Forester. A few years after the start of the Napoleonic Wars, Captain Horatio Hornblower is dispatched by the Admiralty on a secret mission to supply a Central American rebel, 'el Supremo', with arms and thus undermine Spain's grip on its New World colonies. Along the way, Hornblower and the crew of HMS Lydia engage in a running with a much bigger Spanish warship, the ' Natividad ' ; help the Duke of Wellington's sister, Lady Barbara Wellesley, to escape an outbreak of yellow fever in the Caribbean; and, of course, take every opportunity to harry the French and disrupt their campaign in the Iberian peninsula.
