Quando da morte de seu pai, Luiz Roldão jurou unir pelo casamento a família de Bento (melhor amigo de seu pai) e a sua. A família de Luiz Roldão, um fazendeiro severo, mas bom: a mulher Brites (sempre às voltas com os criados), a filha Lili, o filho Jorge, a afilhada Lina (neta do velho Luiz), a irmã Salustiana. Para satisfazer a promessa feita, Jorge está, embora contra a sua vontade, noivo de Rosita, filha do compadre Bento. Salustiana namora com o barbeiro Juca, o que provoca a ira de Roldão.
