At a time when Ugandan lawmakers have proposed a bill to make homosexuality punishable by death, filmmakers Katherine Fairfax Wright and Malika Zouhali-Worrall profile the country's first openly gay man and a religious leader who have put their lives on the line to fight for equality. In Uganda homosexuals are known as "kuchus" and face brutal discrimination for their sexual orientation. Amidst swelling anti-homosexual sentiments in both the government and the local communities, activist David Kato comes out as openly gay, and wages a valiant fight to repeal his country's fiercely homophobic laws. Meanwhile, Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, a rare religious supporter of gay rights in Uganda, finds himself excommunicated from the church over his support of the LGBT community. Later, when David is brutally murdered just weeks after a notable legal victory for the community, a new generation of gay advocates begins to rise up, and challenge their oppressors.
