Magyarország, '50-es évek. Istvánka érzékeny, példaképre, barátságra vágyó kisfiú, kinek édesapja - még az ő születése előtt - meghalt a háborúban. Az iskolakezdés előtt, édesanyja magához veszi, és vidékről felviszi a fővárosba. Egy nap találkozik Márity Lacival, a 21 éves budakeszi nagyfiúval, aki ettől kezdve nemcsak focizni jár vele, de a legtitkosabb kérdéseire is választ ad. A barátja lesz. Istvánka eztán már könnyebben tűri a helyi gyerekek áskálódásait, a felnőttek sokszor érthetetlen viselkedését. Az 1956-os forradalom azonban közbeszól. Márity Laci a felkelők élére áll.
