Recreating the years 1977-84, a time of bellbottoms, disco and drugs, this film from 27-year-old writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (Hard Eight) explores the world of the adult entertainment industry. Naive and uneducated Southern California teen Eddie Adams (Mark Walhberg) isn't very happy with his passive father and a domineering mother. He labors as a kitchen worker in a popular San Fernando Valley nightclub, where one night he's noticed by successful porn producer Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds). Seduced by the "glamour" of the adult entertainment scene, Eddie takes on a new name, Dirk Diggler, and a new life when he joins the makeshift extended family of filmmakers and performers who assemble at Horner's film company. The idealistic Horner dreams of elevating his craft into an art form. Meanwhile, there's money to be made, and Diggler rises to the top. As king of the adult film world, he acquires a suitable wardrobe, a sleek sportscar, and a luxurious house. It's all an endless party. Diggler's ego excesses begin to backfire as the years pass, while his drug intake escalates. He fails to see the new faces eager to replace him. After a humiliating removal from a film set, Diggler spirals downward, hustling in parking lots. The Capitol Records soundtrack features classic songs from the Seventies and Eighties. Choreographer Adam Shankman was brought it to teach the cast accurate disco dance steps of the period. Premiere at the 1997 Toronto Film Festival. Shown at the New York Film Festival. Rated R "for strong sex scenes with explicit dialogue, nudity, drug use, language and violence.", A young man works in a nightclub until a adult film director (Burt Reynolds) discovers him and shows him all the highs and lows of the industry.
