Movie
Better than Chocolate
Synopsis
Love, sex and dealing with your parents are three common dilemmas that form the basis of this romantic comedy from Canada. Maggie (Karyn Dwyer) is a 19-year-old who has dropped out of college and taken a job in a women's bookstore in Vancouver while she decides what she wants to do with her life. One day Maggie meets Kim (Christina Cox), a local artist, and is immediately infatuated. Fortunately for Maggie, Kim feels the same way, and soon the two are very happily involved. Unfortunately for Maggie, it isn't long until she gets an unexpected call from her mother, Lila (Wendy Crewson). It seems Lila and her second husband have decided to split up, and she's decided to relocate to Vancouver and live with Maggie. However, Maggie has never told her mother she's a lesbian, and this only adds to the tensions that exist between them. Meanwhile, Maggie's best friend, Judy (Peter Outerbridge), who just had a sex change, has developed a major crush on Maggie's boss. Better Than Chocolate (the title of which, as you might guess, refers to sex) was shown at the Berlin Film Festival in 1999.
