동아여대 하기 봉사단은 이중령 홍보단장 인솔하에 LST에 오른다. 함내의 수병들은 마음이 들뜨고 갖가지 사건과 상황이 벌어진다. 해이해진 함상 질서를 바로 잡기 위해 박상도 대위는 여대생들도 포함시켜 전투훈련을 시킨다. 여대생 대표인 정아는 훈련을 거부한 것을 사과하고 홍보활동에 임한다. 그리고 문명의 혜택이 미치지 못하는 낙도 주민들의 생활에서 많은 것을 느낀다. 제대한 홍보대원 정태연과 섬아가씨 순이와의 결혼식이 함상에서 치뤄지던 날 박대위와 장상사는 평소 갈망하던 전투 고속정에 부임된다. 둘은 간첩선 두척을 격침시키는 전과를 올리나 장상사가 그만 전사하고 만다. 장상사의 유언에 따라 LST에서 수장식을 한다. 내일이면 홍보활동을 끝마치는 여대생들도 장상사의 죽음을 슬퍼한다.
