Zeke Bálint, a falu tisztességben megöregedett molnára végrendeletében vízimalmát egyetlen lányára, Annára testálja, vezetését pedig Forintos Mátyás molnárlegényre, akit kisgyermekkora óta maga nevelt és úgyszólván fiának tekint. A fiatalok amúgy is "szívelik" egymást, s ez a házasság az öregnek is kedve szerint való volna. Forintos Mátyás lelki békéjét cirkuszosok érkezése zavarja meg, kiderül, ő sokkal erősebb, mint az erejét fitogtató erőművész. Majd a tapasztalt és kacér Piros Katinka, az Aranypáva fogadósnéja veti ki rá a hálóját. Mátyásnak ettől kezdve nincs maradása, felkerekedik és az asszony után utazik. A romlatlan legényt a züllött városban a csalódások és megaláztatások sorozata éri, majd gyilkosság gyanújába keveredik. Végül sikerül tisztáznia magát és visszatér a malomba, ahol Anna hűségesen vár rá.
