Synopsis
Having a child threatens to tear a couple apart instead of bringing them together in this drama from China. Dong and Xia are a young couple who've recently married and moved from the rural village where they first met to the city in hopes of finding work. Dong is eager to have children and Xia wants to oblige him, but after a year of frequent trying Xia is still not pregnant. Dong believes Xia may be infertile, but she's seen a doctor who has assured her the problem isn't with her. As Dong becomes increasingly insistent on having a child and upset that it's not happening, Xia decides to secretly let another man get her pregnant in hopes of making him happy. However, the plan backfires when she discovers she's with child just as Dong gets test results from his doctor saying his sperm count is too low for him to be a likely prospect for fatherhood. The Annunciation was the first feature film from writer and director Hsu Ronin.
