Francie, polovina 19. století. Kostelní zvony bijí na poplach, hoří klášter. Ve zmatku, který tu nastal, zahlédne náhodný jezdec dívku v okně prvního patra. Oheň jí odřízl cestu a tak bez váhání skočí do nabídnuté náruče. Tvář svého zachránce ani nezná. Ten si však odnesl její medailónek. O dva roky později. Na zámku Mornay žijí dva nevlastní bratři. Dědic titulu a majetku, aristokraticky jemný Raoul, a Filip, neurvalý, nespolečenský muž se špatnou pověstí. Právě sem, na zámecký ples, přivádí paní Collierová dceru Charlottu, nesmělou a nezkušenou kláštern….
