Bódy Gábor mannheimi nagydíjas elsőfilmjében az amerikai polgárháborúban harcoló negyvennyolcas magyar emigrációnak állított emléket. A film három alapvető karaktert jelenít meg: a racionalistát, aki eredményei révén boldogul, a tragikus-fatalistát és az érzelmes, a gyökereihez ragaszkodó magyart. Sorsuk eltérő ábrázolása alkalmat adott arra, hogy Bódy Gábor a filmes narráció önreflektív lehetőségeivel kísérletezzen. Tímár Péter trükkoperatőrrel a hagyományos filmanyagról a trükkasztalon új felvételeket készítettek, s ily módon a fényvágással, maszkolással, torzított hangeffektusokkal manipulált anyaggal olyan hatást értek el, mintha korabeli amatőr felvételeket látnánk.
