How Long Is “All the Rage”?

Christopher Bedford is fit, handsome, highly successful and proud to be gay. Christopher is not lacking for temporary lovers, but instead of feeling happy about his popularity, he is lonely for a real boyfriend. Unfortunately, Christopher has an enormous ego and will settle for no one less perfect than he. Those who fail to meet his criteria are used and callously discarded. This coupled with his inability to share real emotions makes it nearly impossible for him to find a permanent lover. But then he attends a dinner party where he meets Stewart, a pudgy, shy book editor. Chris finds his romantic advances rebuffed and this inflames him. Despite the ardent Chris's hot pursuit, Stewart remains demure for a while, but eventually gives in and a relationship begins to bud. Unfortunately, it is Chris, unable to control his sexual wanderlust, who nips their love before it blossoms when he spends a hot night with Stewart's dashing roommate. The consequences of his actions lead him to a painful and almost frightening comeuppance at the end that nearly neutralizes the film's heretofore comic tone. Essentially a social comedy, the story offers a few arch comments on the movie stereotype of '90s homosexuals all being white, buff and upper-middle class.
