A Union in Wait
Synopsis
Wendy Scott and Susan Parker are two women who first met when they were working for the same company, and in time discovered they attended the same church. Scott and Parker are also lesbians, and the two fell in love and began living together. After 16 years as a couple, Parker and Scott decided they wanted to celebrate their relationship with a commitment ceremony, and they chose to hold the ceremony at the Wake Forest Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC, where they were both regular members of the congregation. While the church itself is autonomous, their weekly meetings were held at Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University, and the university refused to allow a same-sex union ceremony to be held in their facilities, which led to considerable controversy between the university, the church, local gay activists, and a number of religious groups and anti-censorship advocates. A Union in Wait is a documentary directed by Ryan Butler that begins with Scott and Parker's relationship and follows the tumult that followed their plans to have a commitment ceremony. A Union in Wait was photographed by Richard Clabaugh, best known for his work on a number of horror films, including Children of the Corn 666, Phantoms, and The Prophecy.
