How Long Is “A Town like Alice”?

Taut Second World War drama starring Virginia Mckenna and Peter Finch that reflects the experience of the generation of Australians that fought the war against the Japanese, based on the novel by Nevil Shute. Jean Paget is amongst a group of women trapped in Malaya who are forced by the Japanese army to walk hundreds of miles in search of food and shelter. But Australian soldier Jo Harman sneaks food to them from his labour camp and later, after the war, Jean visits Jo in his home town of Alice Springs but finds that life as a woman there is none too easy. Both Finch and McKenna won BAFTA's for their performances.
