1956 nyara. A vidéki kisvárosban a megyei főkapitány pesti továbbképzése idején Rigó Dezső a teljhatalmú főnök, aki a focicsapat NB II-ben maradása érdekében mindenre kész. Egy mérkőzés után dühében agyonveri a bírót. Balla, a politikai okok miatt börtönjárt újságíró megírja az igazságot, s bár a cikk nem jelenik meg, Rigó elviteti Ballát. Elhallgattatná Dongót is, aki tanúja volt a gyilkosságnak. Végül az ügybe két ember belehal, Balla elmebetegnek nyilváníttatik, Ballánét és a fiát kirakják a lakásukból. A visszatérő rendőrfőkapitány rendet akar csinálni…_x000D_ Kósa Ferenc 1981-ben a filmért a Magyar Játékfilmszemle kiemelt rendezői díját kapta.
