A két szegény család, özvegy Kovácsné és kisfia, Lacika, valamint Barabás Ferenc és kislánya, Terike jó szomszédságban élnek egymással a falu szélén. Amikor a két család külön-külön Pestre költözik, hogy megélhetést találjon, ismét összetalálkoznak egy bérkaszárnyában. A gyerekek együtt kóborolnak a városban. Kovácsné mosással keres pénzt, Barabás pedig Amerikába vándorol szerencsét próbálni. Kovácsné egyre betegebb lesz, végül Terikét a házmesterre bízza, ő pedig Lacikával visszatér a falujukba, ott akar meghalni. Anyja halála után Lacika visszamegy Pestre, megkeresi Terikét s a két árva együtt próbál boldogulni. Eközben Barabás jó munkát talált magának Amerikában és elküld Terikéért.
