3 Idiots

(2009) In recent years, director Raju Hirani has made some of best-loved Indian films in the Munnabhai series, but no one could have predicted that 3 Idiots would become one of Hindi cinema's biggest-ever hits. Told through a series of flashbacks, it's the story of students Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan (Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi), at one of India's elite engineering colleges. The three men become friends and help each other through the trials of university life. Rancho is an exceptionally bright student who challenges the educational system; he doesn't believe in learning by rote, favouring creativity and inventiveness. This doesn't endear him to the Dean of the college, a bad-tempered, sour man nicknamed VIrus (Boman Irani). And to make matters more complicated, Rancho is in love with VIrus's daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor). The director tackles India's educational system head on in this film, which struck a chord with audiences as much for its social message as its light-hearted comedy.
